MPEG

MPEG

MPEG, in computer science, a set of specifications for compressing and playing back movies, video clips, music, and other computer multimedia files. MPEG is the acronym for Motion Pictures Experts Group, a committee that developed the MPEG standard. MPEG rules cover both encoding, for storage on disk, and decoding, for digital playback. Viewing an MPEG video on a microcomputer requires an MPEG decoder, which can be hardware, software, or a combination of the two. Another version of the MPEG standard, MPEG-4, is specifically designed for streaming audio and video over the Internet, allowing the user of a personal computer, personal digital assistant, or cellular radio telephone (cell phone) to view multimedia files as the files are arriving from distant servers.
